We regret to advise that the Hūnua Traverse remains closed for pest control operations in the Hūnua Ranges Regional Park.
The full closure of the Hūnua Traverse commenced on 14 July to allow for a two-phase aerial bait drop. As of today (3 October), the requisite clear weather window hasn’t yet presented itself and as such the planned operation hasn’t taken place. According to the agreement between Regional Parks and the Ministry of Health, the Hūnua Traverse must remain closed as an ‘end-to-end product’ until the pest control operation is completed.
The Auckland Regional Parks team has advised us that they are working hard to complete the operation in October, but if weather delays continue then the operation may push into early November as a last resort.
While this ongoing closure is frustrating, we are delighted to advise that some roads within the Hūnua Ranges Regional Park remain open for cyclists who are keen to get in some gravel KMs in the area, including ARA Drive (between Workman Road and Upper Mangatawhiri Valley, also referred to as Mangatangi Hill Road) and the Valley Loop.
It’s important to note that the entire park will close for a period of time during the pest control work so do check the Regional Parks website before you ride.
We’ll be in touch again once we have an official reopening date.
Ngā mihi
The Hūnua Traverse team
