Information for Hūnua Traverse shuttle users
Please arrive with a clean bike
Kauri dieback disease presents a real risk to the Hūnua Ranges Regional Park (the largest disease-free kauri forest left in NZ) and Auckland Council takes its custodian role very seriously.
In addition to arriving with a clean bike, please use every hygiene station you pass through (there will be four in total). We know that these are niggly, but this is the price of entry to this stunning regional park.
Remember to stay on trail, and keep out of any restricted areas.
Familiarise yourself with your route
Check your route before you ride
The space between the two summits is a communications void, please download a map or a Trailforks route before you start your ride.
The route is signposted with Nga Haerenga signs and information signs are located in Clevedon Village, Kaiaua and within close proximity of every bike hygiene station.
Navigating the Upper Mangatawhiri Valley
Located mid-ride, the Upper Mangatawhiri Valley includes a short section of shared path where you will depart from the gravel road.
Note that this area is accessible by vehicle
(if for any reason you find that you need to exit the ride early).
An emergency phone is located at the Upper Mangatawhiri Campground
(cell phone service is not available in the valley).
Be prepared
It’s a long walk out if you get a flat/mechanical or drain your eBike battery. Please be prepared.
There is no cell phone service in the valley and we recommend that riders carry a PLB.
Toilets
Toilets are available in at either end of the route in Clevedon Village (adjacent the Community Hall) and Kaiaua. Along the route, you’ll also find toilets at the Mangatangi Hill and Workman Road entries to the Regional Park, at the Mangatangi Dam Visitor Centre and at the Upper Mangatawhiri Campground (not far from the emergency phone).
Potable water
Potable water is available in Clevedon Village (adjacent the public toilets, next to the Clevedon Hall) and at the Upper Mangatawhiri Dam campsite (approx mid point in the ride).
